Students of ENG250: Introduction to American Literature are “appalled” at their professor’s liberal use of racial slurs while reading passages of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Though some undergraduates argue the writings are a product of their time, others have been put on edge by the professor’s reportedly “enthusiastic” enunciation of certain slurs.
“It’s not like, 'Tarantino' cool you know? It’s got more like a 12 Years a Slave type of tone” said Jake Appleby, a concerned 3rd year student.
While many share the same concerns, there remains a large contingent of students who have lauded the “authentic and unapologetic” approach their professor is taking.
Whether or not the apprehension of students will reach the ears of the faculty remains to be seen. In the meantime, class-goers will have to show resilience in the next few lectures pertaining to the study of Mark Twain’s works.
Some students remain optimistic that the tone of the lectures will change as the course moves on to a more modern work: To Kill a Mockingbird.
